Over the years I’ve threatened to record a Christmas album. Usually, I’ll remember the idea a few weeks before Christmas and it’s quickly abandoned. This year it was brought to my attention in the early Fall and I had no obvious reasons not to move forward with the project. The plan called for 2 classic tunes and for me to write a new song. After a process of elimination, I decided on the 2 classic songs, What Child Is This, and Auld Lang Syne (both available on www.carymorin.com and all digital platforms). The original tune took a few days to arrive at a concept.

I chose to focus on the idea of parents deceiving their children until they reach an age when they begin to question the magical elements of the Santa Claus myth. As soon as I started writing the lyrics, I started to remember how happy my own children were about Santa when they were young and how great it made me feel. This thought made me change my thinking about parents fibbing to their children about the existence of Santa Claus…

The song then started to evolve into more of something that celebrates a child’s faith in Santa and their quest of being deserving of his attention. Instead of consuming all of the treats left for him, the child now anticipates that her gesture will suffice, even going so far as to leave a beer to assist Santa during his long voyage. I know this brings to mind the obvious legal questions of drinking and driving, but I moved on, leaving that to Santa and his reindeer. As I pondered the child, it occurred to me to designate the child’s birthday as Christmas Eve, thus revealing the child as the father’s own most cherished Christmas gift of all.

I wanted the chords to be similar to some of the classic holiday songs. I chose a key that I could sing towards the top of my vocal range. I wanted to be aware of ascending and descending chords. I also wanted to include a possible key change or at least the feel of one. When I felt I had the chord progression, I recorded the guitar part keeping the cadence of the words in mind. I like how the song sits now and will leave it as a guitar and vocal recording in the hopes that someone somewhere will take the song into a studio with a number of their favorite musicians and take a shot at this song. A string quartet would be good, and don’t forget the sleighbells.
