about

Written at home for this project. A combination of two ideas: the story of the hardship of raising family and feeding a family off of your own business, in this case, a boat. The reasons why you do it – you love your family and are devout to god – the path He laid out for me. A working on the river song with a spiritual feel. It has a sort of bluesy feel to it and there’s almost a sort of trance like progression up to the bridge where the chords change with a choral background vocals that come and go. The finish has a strong choral performance… I have this image throughout my life of southern music of all types, rock and funk music from NOLA, Creole music from Louisiana and the sound of Doug Kershaw on the fiddle that I heard when I was a very young child. It inspired me to learn fiddle. The subject matter of those songs have also stuck with me through the years – a working man’s song, so to speak.

lyrics

CHOSEN ROAD -CARY MORIN

I’VE BEEN THINKING HOW THE TIME
GOT AWAY FROM ME
BETWEEN A HOUSE AND A BOAT
AND A FAMILY
IT’S A LIVIN
IT’S NOT LIVIN
BUT I WONT COMPLAIN
ABOUT THE CHOSEN ROAD FOR ME

WELL MY CHILDREN MY BOYS
THEY CAN RUN IT ALL
IF THE WATER GIVES UP NOTHIN
WE’LL BE HUNGRY BY THE END OF FALL
BUT I WON’T COMPLAIN, NO I WON’T COMPLAIN
ABOUT THE CHOSEN ROAD FOR ME

(INSTRUMENTAL)

THERE’S A CLOUD
HANGIN OVER ME
IT’S A MIDLIFE SQUALL
IF ONE END DON’T MEET THE OTHER
THE MAN’S GONNA TAKE IT ALL

I’VE BEEN THINKING BOUT THAT FINE LINE
THERE’S A CROSS TO BEAR
AT TIMES I HAVE A QUIET PLACE
WHERE I CAN REST MY HEAD
BUT I WON’T COMPLAIN, NO I WON’T COMPLAIN
ABOUT THE CHOSEN ROAD FOR ME

I WON’T COMPLAIN, NO I WON’T COMPLAIN
ABOUT THE CHOSEN ROAD FOR ME

STILL I WON’T COMPLAIN NO I WON’T COMPLAIN
ABOUT THE CHOSEN ROAD FOR ME

OH THE ROAD HE CHOSE (4X)
OH THE ROAD HE CHOSE FOR ME
