about

Written specifically for this project at home also. The lyrics and chords came at the same time with this tune, which doesn’t happen for me very often. It came out that way because I was concentrating exclusively, at the time, on songwriting. The scene was a fisherman after a day of work on the water. What it’s like navigating in the dark on the way home. There are specific lights in the distance that overtime become landmarks to navigate by. It wasn’t metaphorical at the time, but it’s a cool idea metaphorically speaking. The idea of navigating in the dark probably doesn’t occur to folks who have never had to do it… The calmness of the water at night, the sounds, smells were inspirational in creating the sound scape of the song.

lyrics

TONIGHT -CARY MORIN

A BOAT OUT ON THE RIVER
DAYLIGHT GIVES WAY TO NIGHT
THE WATER TURNS INCANDESCENT
BY THE MASTHEAD LIGHT TONIGHT
I’LL MAKE MY WAY BACK HOME
TONIGHT

YOU ARE A MUSE TO ME
YOU HELP ME BREAK ON THROUGH
IF I SHOULD EVER LOSE MY WAY
TONIGHT TONIGHT IN THE MOONLIGHT
I’LL FIND MY WAY BY THE MASTHEAD LIGHT
TONIGHT

SO MUCH TIME BEHIND ME NOW
SO MANY TIMES I FIND NO COMFORT HERE
TONIGHT I’LL TRY TO MAKE IT HOME
IN THE QUIET OF THE NIGHT
TONIGHT TONIGHT

(INSTRUMENTAL)

YOU GIVE ME A REASON TO KEEP DRIFTING ON THE RIVER
THE LIGHT GIVES WAY TO NIGHT
WATER TURNS INCANDESCENT
BY THE MASTHEAD LIGHT TONIGHT
I’LL MAKE MY WAY BACK HOME TONIGHT

SO MUCH TIME BEHIND ME NOW
SO MANY TIMES I FIND NO COMFORT HERE
TONIGHT I’LL TRY TO MAKE IT HOME
IN THE QUIET OF THE NIGHT
TONIGHT
